It was another huge day today, after a relatively laid back yesterday. It started off pretty early with a hearty breakfast before we braved Vienna's trams to make our way out to the Belvedere Palace. To get there, get on Tram D, right across from the entrance to the Opera house. Get on the tram that heads to the right, looking at the Opera House. You'll need to catch it from the island in the middle of the road.
After a false start where we got on the right tram going the wrong way, and a tram that prematurely terminated, we arrived and cashed in our voucher for tickets to the Belvedere.
We toured the art gallery (which they call a museum) and finally found some real art in Vienna. Unfortunately we lost our ticket somewhere on our tour around, but we didn't really feel like the idea of the big walk down to the lower Belvedere, and there wasn't really anything we were particularly interested in seeing anyway. The gardens were in a state of construction and not particularly conducive to a pleasant stroll.
We decided to head back to the Natural History Museum and the Kunsthistor Museum. The latter (which we actually visited first) had a pretty good art collection, and a couple of temporary exhibitions that we really enjoyed. The last one was hidden away on the top floor, so don't forget to check up there if you go. It was probably the highlight of the gallery for us, even though it was small.
We went back to the Natural History Museum with a fully charged camera and got heaps of photos. Neither of the art museums that we visited today allowed photo's (or back packs, or jackets, and charge you to book them into a cloak room, and charge for a map).
After finally exhausting ourselves, we grabbed a quick Burger King meal as a lunch/dinner before heading back to the hotel for a quick shower before we headed off to the Mozart Concert.
The musicians were brilliant tonight, but we felt they deserved a bit more from the audience they had to endure. Hundreds of flash photos (despite signs asking for none), and a generally denim clad disrespectful audience, who like to chat and, where we were sitting, to get up off their seats and cram in around the people who had spent good money for the good seats at the front.
Anyway, apart from these few let downs, the musicians were brilliant. Not quite the romantic evening evening of classy decadence we were expecting, but we were treated to some amazing music played by some astoundingly good musicians.
We have an early start tomorrow and so need to pack things tonight, so we haven't had a chance to upload photo's. We'll try to get something sorted in the next few days. We're off to Budapest tomorrow, and have a tour tomorrow evening, so it might be a few days before you get to catch up with us.
